VHF Seminar A Radio Station Licence is no longer required when boating in Canadian or U.S. waters, but you must have a Restricted Operator's Certificate. CPS has been delegated authority to issue Restricted Operator Certificates (Maritime) to Pleasure Craft Operators. Canadian Power & Sail Squadrons offer a seminar on proper use and procedures for marine radio, home-study material and examination opportunities. If you are operating a pleasure craft and have a fixed or portable marine radio, all those who operate the radio are required by law to have a Restricted Operator's Certificate (Maritime). Take The Radio Talk Seminar, or home-study The Radio Talk Manual, ($22 per manual) successfully complete the supervised examination, and you can be certified. With The Radio Talk Seminar, you will learn the special phonetic alphabet, as well as correct radio operating procedures. This seminar will enable you to pass Industry Canada's Restricted Radiotelephone Operator's Certificate Examination, which will be given at the conclusion of the seminar. Seminar is approximately 4 – 6 hours at a cost of $40.00 The VHF radio is the best and, in some cases, the only method to get help on the water. As hand-held and fixed VHF radio stations are relatively inexpensive today, if you want to protect yourself and your family, you should be a certified operator. Remember, a cellular phone may not always function in a given area, might not get the proper authorities, and could just connect you to "voice mail". table of contents * Maritime Mobile Service * Procedures * Distress Communication * Urgency Communications * Safety Communications * Distress Simulations * Additional Information * Global Maritime Distress & Safety System (GMDSS) Bridge Officers If you would like more information contact: * Gary Vernon, Training Officer 902-667-7851 * Elbert White, Commodore 902-667-2366 |
